About

Sebastian Penny is a photographer currently based in Surrey, specialising in portraiture and capturing his subjects personalities in their portraits. He is skilled with both studio and on location photography, and capture a wide range of subjects for many different purposes and events.

Penny’s personal practice makes use of a range of non-traditional techniques from choreographed movements in front of the camera to alternative darkroom processes that abstract portraiture in order to create portraits that examine identity, specifically within the LGBT community. Penny aims to create this work as collaboratively as possible in order to provide a voice and platform for others to express themselves through photography.

Penny’s most recent work explores how movement can be used to accentuate the storytelling potential of photographic images, working closely with LGBT individuals in order to help them create self-portraits from their homes during the Covid-19 lockdown. The work combines text and abstract imagery in order to revisit a moment from the subjects lives, a moment that offers insight into what it means to be a part of the LGBT community.
